Before Naruto. Before Bleach. Before the Big Three had a name. There was Dragon Ball Z — and for an entire generation of Western kids in the 1990s, Dragon Ball Z was simply anime. The category and the example were the same thing.
Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Daisuke Nishio, Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV from 1989 to 1996. 291 episodes following the adult Goku and his allies across four escalating sagas — the Saiyan invasion, Frieza on Namek, the androids and Cell, and the decade-spanning weight of Majin Buu. Akira Toriyama's power scaling, once a comedy mechanic in the original Dragon Ball, became mythology here. Transformations as revelation. The Super Saiyan moment. Gohan vs. Cell in a fight that is still being discussed. The argument about power levels started here and has never ended.
In the West the story is more complicated and more interesting. Ocean Productions dubbed it first — a version truncated, edited, scored by Bruce Faulconer's electric guitar-driven replacement soundtrack that an entire generation now considers inseparable from the show itself. Cartoon Network ran it in syndication. Toonami ran it in the afternoon slot that trained a demographic to expect anime at 4pm. Kids who had never heard the word fansub knew every Kamehameha, every Spirit Bomb, every moment of dead air in a Frieza fight that took four episodes to cover forty-five seconds.
Funimation eventually acquired full rights and started again. The uncut version. The original Kikuchi score. The complete run. Then came Dragon Ball Z Kai — the remaster that trimmed the series to its canonical bones, removing the extended powering-up sequences that had always been the show's most honest flaw.
None of them are the Seed of Might.
The SoM remaster — 291 episodes, fully color and audio graded, built from the ground up as the definitive archival version — is what this archive holds. Not broadcast. Not Kai. Not Funimation's various attempts at a definitive release. The complete Dragon Ball Z, treated with the respect it was never quite given while the licensing disputes were still being fought over its corpse.
The power level arguments are still happening. The show is still here.

Bardock

The Lone Rebel

The father of Goku and the star of arguably the greatest anime TV special to ever hit cable television. Bardock realized Frieza's betrayal before anyone else and launched a doomed, one-man rebellion to save his race. Wearing his fallen comrade's blood-soaked armband, his tragic final stand was the stuff of absolute legend. He is practically the patron saint of early 2000s dial-up anime music videos.

Son Goku

Primary Protagonist

The gold standard of shonen heroes and the emotional cornerstone of the franchise. From his humble, terrestrial beginnings to the legendary moment he ascends to Super Saiyan on the crumbling surface of Namek, Goku's journey is the defining mythos of a generation. He embodies a pure, unyielding drive for self-improvement. While his relentlessly optimistic and sometimes naive exterior often disarms his foes, it masks a peerless martial arts genius. His sacrifices for Earth are the blueprint every shonen hero since has been measured against.

Master Roshi

The Turtle Hermit

The originator of the iconic Kamehameha wave and the martial arts master who started it all. Even though the power scaling of the Z era quickly left him hanging out at Kame House watching workout tapes, Roshi's teachings are the foundation of everything Goku and Krillin achieved. He's the legendary, deeply flawed sensei who passed the torch to the next generation of Earth's defenders.

Chi-Chi

Matriarch

The fiercest woman on Earth and the only person in the entire universe who can strike genuine terror into the hearts of Goku and Gohan. Chi-Chi is the ultimate anime tiger mom. While the universe is constantly on the brink of annihilation, she is the one desperately trying to make sure Gohan finishes his homework and Goku actually gets a paying job. Her frying pan is arguably a weapon of mass destruction.

Bulma

Genius Inventor

The undisputed brains of the operation. Let's be real: without Bulma, none of this works. She invented the Dragon Radar, reverse-engineered alien spaceships, and literally built a time machine in her backyard. She's completely fearless, routinely yelling at terrifying galactic tyrants and super-powered aliens without breaking a sweat. She was holding the plot together from day one.

Kami

Original Guardian of Earth

The wise, ancient Namekian who served as the original Guardian of Earth. Centuries ago, he purged the evil from his soul to claim his divine throne, inadvertently creating the Demon King Piccolo in the process. Because his life force is directly tied to Piccolo's, if one dies, the other does too. As the creator of Earth's original Dragon Balls, Kami is the spiritual foundation of the entire franchise's mythology.

Raditz

Catalyst Antagonist

The big brother who kicked the door open to the entire Z era! Raditz showed up, casually caught a bullet, dropped the bombshell that Goku was an alien, and completely broke the power scale with his iconic Scouter. He forced the unthinkable: Goku and Piccolo teaming up. While his time on screen was short, he is the ultimate "welcome to the next level" boss fight that changed the franchise forever.

Son Gohan

Successor / Protagonist

The boy burdened with explosive, boundless potential. Gohan's narrative provides a beautiful, tragic subversion of his father's legacy; he is a gentle scholar who does not crave the fight, making his forced ascensions all the more spectacular. The Cell Games remain his magnum opus , a cinematic crescendo where the pacifist finally snaps under the weight of everything he'd been holding back, delivering the iconic Super Saiyan 2 awakening that permanently redefined the series' power scaling and made every kid watching feel something they still can't quite explain.

The Demon King reincarnate turned stoic surrogate father. Piccolo's redemption arc quietly but firmly anchors the early sagas of the series. His profound bond with Gohan transcends bloodlines, transforming him from Goku's fiercest terrestrial rival into Earth's most reliable, vigilant guardian. Piccolo's tactical brilliance consistently fills the gaps where raw Saiyan power falls short. His signature Special Beam Cannon remains one of the franchise's most iconic and lethal techniques.

Krillin

Supporting Protagonist

Goku's lifelong best buddy and the ultimate Earthling underdog. Sure, he might spend a lot of time tossing Senzu beans from the sidelines while the Saiyans go wild, but let's not forget he invented the Destructo Disc! Plus, he managed to win over Android 18, which is arguably the greatest victory in the entire series. Krillin always brings that much-needed relatable, human perspective when the fights start getting completely out of hand.

Yamcha

The Underdog / Meme Legend

The original desert bandit and the internet's favorite punching bag long before memes were even a thing. Look, we all know the infamous Saibaman crater incident, but let's give Yamcha some credit! He brought the Wolf Fang Fist to the table, and you have to respect a guy who consistently shows up to help his friends fight literal planet-busters when he'd probably be much safer just sticking to his professional baseball career.

Tien Shinhan

Dedicated Martial Artist

The guy who simply refused to be left behind by the power creep. Tien is the definition of martial arts discipline. Even when the Saiyans and aliens were throwing around energy that could blow up galaxies, Tien stood his ground. His legendary moment pinning down Semi-Perfect Cell with a relentless barrage of Neo Tri-Beams is easily one of the hypest, most respect-worthy underdog moments you could ever catch on afternoon TV.

Chiaotzu

Telekinetic Fighter / Tien's Companion

A small, pale-skinned martial artist with psychic powers who is the inseparable best friend and training partner of Tien Shinhan. Chiaotzu uses his telekinesis to disrupt enemies and redirect energy. Though frequently outclassed as the series' power levels scale up, his desperate, tragic attempt to blow himself up to take down Nappa is the Saiyan Saga moment that hits hardest on a rewatch.

Yajirobe

Unlikely Savior / Cowardly Samurai

The portly, sword-wielding ronin who would much rather eat a mountain of food than save the universe. Yajirobe is a self-proclaimed coward who spends most fights hiding in the bushes. However, his legacy is immortalized by the single most crucial clutch moment in the Saiyan Saga: sneaking up on a giant Ape Vegeta and slicing his tail off with a katana, proving that sometimes, a coward with a sword is exactly what the universe needs.

Saiyan Enforcer

The bald, hulking menace who made Earth's greatest defenders look like absolute amateurs. Nappa was the sheer, terrifying brute force of the Saiyan invasion. He effortlessly wiped out half the main cast while Vegeta just stood in the background smirking. Plus, as the guy who received the scouter reading, he is physically responsible for setting up one of the most quoted lines in anime history: "It's over 9000!"

Deuteragonist / Rival

The Prince of all Saiyans and the subject of perhaps the medium's most meticulously crafted character arc. Introduced as a ruthless, bloodthirsty conqueror, Vegeta's agonizing evolution into a reluctant defender of Earth is one of the most convincing long-form character arcs the medium has ever produced. His towering pride is simultaneously his greatest weapon and his most devastating flaw. To witness his tearful plea to Goku on Namek or his ultimate, blinding sacrifice against Majin Buu is to understand what DBZ was actually about the whole time.

King Kai

Deity of the North Quadrant / Mentor

The eccentric, blue-skinned deity who rules over the North Quadrant of the universe from a tiny, high-gravity planet at the end of Snake Way. King Kai is a master martial artist with a bizarre requirement: you must make him laugh with a bad pun before he will train you. Despite his goofy antics with Bubbles the monkey, he is the genius who taught Goku both the Kaio-Ken and the Spirit Bomb, changing the course of every major battle in Z.

Zarbon

Frieza's Elite General

Frieza's highly elegant, intelligent, and incredibly vain right-hand general. Zarbon despises anything ugly and prides himself on his handsome appearance. However, he hides a dark secret: when pushed to his limits, he can transform into a hideous, reptilian beast of pure, brutal muscle. His shocking, monstrous transformation on Namek gave Vegeta one of the most violent, one-sided beatdowns of his life.

Guldo

Ginyu Force Psychic / Time-Stopper

The small, four-eyed green alien who is the physically weakest member of the Ginyu Force, but arguably possesses the most terrifying abilities. Guldo can literally freeze time for as long as he can hold his breath, and utilizes psychic telekinesis to bind his targets and impale them with sharp objects. While he is often treated as the butt of the joke by his comrades, his supernatural tricks nearly spell doom for Gohan and Krillin.

Recoome

Ginyu Force Heavy Hitter

The towering, orange-haired powerhouse of the Ginyu Force. Recoome treats terrifying, life-or-death battles like a playground game, gleefully performing goofy, theatrical poses and naming his attacks ridiculous things like the "Recoome Eraser Gun." Despite his clownish behavior, his raw physical durability and strength are legendary, effortlessly breaking the Z-Fighters' bodies on Namek before Goku's arrival.

Burter

Ginyu Force Speedster / "The Blue Hurricane"

The massive, blue-skinned speedster of the Ginyu Force who proudly boasts that he is the "fastest in the universe." Despite his colossal height, Burter moves with blinding speed, leaving afterimages that baffle his opponents. Alongside his partner Jeice, he forms a deadly tag-team combination, though his absolute speed-based arrogance is shattered when Goku easily outpaces him without even trying.

Ginyu Force Sub-Leader / "The Red Magma"

The red-skinned, white-haired sub-leader of the Ginyu Force, hailing from Planet Brench. Known as "The Red Magma," Jeice acts as Captain Ginyu's reliable right-hand man and the team's primary strategist (when they aren't busy posing). He specializes in fire-based energy attacks, most notably his signature Crusher Ball, and coordinates deadly team-up maneuvers with his best friend and partner, Burter.

Elite Mercenary / Choreographer

The undisputed king of flamboyant battle poses. When Ginyu and his elite mercenary squad touched down on Namek, they brought this incredibly weird, high-energy sentai vibe right to the middle of a deadly serious galactic turf war. From his devastating Body Change technique that completely flipped the script on Goku, to accidentally turning himself into a Namekian frog, Ginyu was pure, chaotic, must-watch television.

Dende

Guardian of Earth

The brave little Namekian who stepped up when his people needed him most. Surviving the absolute horror of Frieza's invasion, Dende's healing abilities were the only reason the Z Fighters survived long enough for Goku to arrive. Taking over the mantle as the new Guardian of Earth and upgrading the Dragon Balls made him one of the most underappreciated MVPs of the later sagas.

Frieza

Primary Antagonist

The galactic tyrant and the ultimate catalyst for the modern Saiyan legend. Frieza is the benchmark against which anime villains are still measured. His cold, polite sociopathy and terrifying sequence of multi-stage transformations induced genuine dread during the historic Namek Saga. As the architect of the Saiyan genocide, the poetic justice of his eventual defeat at the hands of the very race he sought to exterminate is one of the most satisfying payoffs the series ever delivered.

Future Trunks

Time-Traveling Hero

The mysterious teen who showed up out of absolutely nowhere, casually went Super Saiyan, and sliced Frieza into cold cuts. With the giant sword, the purple hair, and that iconic Capsule Corp jacket, Trunks brought a massive wave of cool factor to the show. Coming from a ruined future, he carried this serious, desperate energy that completely changed the vibe of the series and set the stage for the legendary Android Saga.

Dr. Gero

Red Ribbon Scientist / Android 20

The brilliant, vengeful chief scientist of the defunct Red Ribbon Army. Driven by a lifelong hatred of Goku for destroying his military empire, Gero spent decades spying on the Z-Fighters to build the perfect mechanical assassins. To achieve immortality and survive long enough to see his revenge realized, he even transplanted his own brain into a cybernetic body, becoming Android 20. He is the ultimate catalyst for the entire Android and Cell Sagas.

Android 17

Deadly Cybernetic Rebel

The twin brother of Android 18, similarly kidnapped and cybernetically modified by Dr. Gero. Sporting his signature orange scarf and a rebellious, park-ranger-in-training vibe, 17 is a deadly wild card with an infinite power supply. His legendary, grinding war of attrition with Piccolo on an island is one of the absolute best choreographic highlights of the entire Android Saga.

Android 18

Reformed Antagonist

The effortlessly cool cyborg who showed up, casually dismantled the Prince of all Saiyans, and then went shopping. With her infinite stamina and that iconic denim-on-denim outfit, 18 brought a totally different flavor of swagger to the Android Saga. She went from terrifying Earth's special forces to settling down with Krillin, and remains one of the most effortlessly cool characters the franchise ever produced.

Android 16

The Gentle Giant

The towering, stoic redhead who really just wanted to hang out in the forest and look at birds. Despite being programmed exclusively to murder Goku, 16 turned out to be the moral compass of the Cell Games. His final, desperate speech to Gohan about protecting the life he loved still hits like a gut punch thirty years later. His tragic end was the exact spark needed to ignite Gohan's legendary Super Saiyan 2 transformation.

Cell

Major Antagonist

The ultimate biological android who kept us all completely glued to the screen as he absorbed his way to his "Perfect" form. Cell was so incredibly confident and smug about his new power level that he decided to host his own televised martial arts tournament just to flex on Earth's defenders. He brought a calculating, psychological edge to his fights that made the Cell Games required viewing.

Next-Gen Prodigy

The spitting image of his father and Trunks's partner in crime. Goten brought a massive wave of lighthearted, kid-brother energy to the incredibly dark Buu Saga. The fact that he managed to figure out the legendary Super Saiyan transformation completely by accident at the age of seven while training with his mom is both hilarious and proof that the Goku bloodline was done messing around.

Videl

Fierce Fighter / Ally

The tough-as-nails daughter of Hercule who absolutely refused to just be a helpless bystander. Videl brought a phenomenal high-school-detective energy to the early Buu Saga. She actually pieced together the Great Saiyaman's identity, demanded Gohan teach her how to manipulate ki, and took a brutal beating at the World Martial Arts Tournament without ever backing down. A total powerhouse who grounded the cosmic craziness with some real grit.

Hercule (Mr. Satan)

Earth's "Champion"

The undisputed World Martial Arts Champion , at least, as far as the general public knows! Hercule is the ultimate hype man and the necessary comedic relief when the cosmic stakes get way too heavy. Watching him try to logic his way out of dealing with super-powered aliens using smoke and mirrors is classic television. But let's give the Champ his due: without his ability to rally the people of Earth, the Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu would have completely fizzled out!

Supreme Kai (Shin)

Celestial Guardian of the Universe

The highest-ranking deity in the universe, who descended to Earth in disguise to warn the Z-Fighters about the awakening of Majin Buu. Shin brought an immense sense of cosmic mystery and scale to the early Buu Saga, initially intimidating even Piccolo with his divine presence. While the sheer, ridiculous power scaling of the Saiyans quickly left him looking perpetually shocked on the sidelines, his knowledge of the cosmos and the Potara earrings was vital to saving reality.

Babidi

Evil Wizard / Summoner of Buu

A wicked, parasitic alien wizard who inherited his father Bibidi's dark magic. Babidi's primary power is his ability to exploit the hidden malice in the hearts of powerful warriors, placing them under his mind-control "Majin" spell to boost their strength. Despite his frail, insect-like appearance, his manipulative schemes , most notably corrupting Vegeta , directly lead to the resurrection of the ancient terror, Majin Buu.

Dabura

King of the Demon Realm

The towering, sophisticated King of the Demon Realm who fell under the mind-control of the wizard Babidi. Dabura is a menacing gentleman who fights with a giant broadsword, darkness magic, and a highly dangerous spit that instantly turns anyone it touches into solid stone. His clash with Gohan in the rocky wastelands served as a stark, tense reminder that the threats of the Buu Saga were unlike anything the Z-Fighters had faced before.

Majin Buu

Major Antagonist

The ultimate chaotic wildcard. Whether you're talking about the innocent, bouncy pink blob who turned people into chocolate, or the terrifying, shape-shifting menace he became later on, Buu was just wildly unpredictable. He introduced a completely weird, wacky, and ridiculously destructive flavor to the final chapters of the Z era. You never quite knew if he was going to take a nap or blow up a planet.

Gotenks

Fusion Prodigy

The absolute embodiment of hyperactive kid energy fused with world-breaking power. When Goten and Trunks successfully performed the Fusion Dance, we got an unbelievably arrogant, loudmouthed powerhouse who treated fighting a world-ending threat like a playground game. Yelling out ridiculous move names like "Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack" and "Galactic Donut," Gotenks made the terrifying Buu saga feel like a wild Saturday morning fever dream.

The Ultimate Potara Fusion

The mind-bogglingly powerful fusion of Goku and Vegeta, brought to life via the sacred Potara Earrings. Combining Goku's fighting genius with Vegeta's ruthless strategic intellect , and sporting a double-layered voice that sounded like the universe clearing its throat , Vegito spent his screen time completely embarrassing Super Buu. He fought with his hands in his pockets, turned into a piece of hard candy, and still managed to dominate the battlefield.

Old Kai (Rou Kaioshin)

Ancient Deity / Mentor

The ancient, deeply eccentric deity who accidentally got sealed inside the Z-Sword because Beerus was having a petty argument with him millions of years ago. He is the entire reason Gohan achieves his "Ultimate/Mystic" state without needing to turn his hair yellow, bypassing the entire Super Saiyan power scale. Furthermore, he sacrifices his literal remaining life force to give Goku his soul back for the final battle against Buu. Leaving him out makes the endgame lore look entirely incomplete.
