機動戦士ガンダムSEED

Details & Synopsis
The Cosmic Era. Humanity has divided itself along a new axis: Naturals, humans born without modification, and Coordinators, humans whose genetic potential was engineered before birth. The technology exists. The resentment it produced exists in equal measure. The war was always coming.

It arrives on February 14th. The Bloody Valentine - a nuclear strike on the Coordinator colony Junius Seven by Natural forces. Three hundred thousand dead. The conflict that follows is what the series inherits.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED aired on MBS from 2002 to 2003. Fifty episodes set in an alternate Gundam timeline - not the Universal Century, not After Colony, something new - built to bring a generation of viewers to the franchise who had either missed Gundam Wing on Toonami or been too young to catch it. It worked. SEED was one of the most downloaded anime of 2002 and 2003. The fansub community turned it around fast because the demand was there and the official release was not.

Kira Yamato is a Coordinator who has been living among Naturals, comfortable in the gap, until the war finds him and he ends up in the cockpit of the Strike Gundam by necessity rather than choice. His childhood friend Athrun Zala is on the ZAFT side, flying for the people Kira is now fighting against. The series is smart enough to make both of them right and both of them wrong simultaneously, and patient enough to let that contradiction sit.

The Freedom Gundam. Lacus Clyne. The moment the show stops hedging about what it is and commits. These are the things people remember.

A sequel series, Gundam SEED Destiny, followed in 2004. Its reputation is complicated. SEED's is not. Fifty episodes of the best entry point the Gundam franchise has produced since Wing.

Kira Yamato

Ultimate Coordinator / Strike Pilot

A quiet, gentle engineering student living peacefully in a neutral space colony until a sudden ZAFT raid drags him directly into the cockpit of the experimental GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. Kira is a "Coordinator"—a genetically engineered human with vastly superior physical and mental capabilities. Forced to protect his natural-born civilian friends on the run, he fights with an agonizing internal conflict, weeping over every lethal choice he has to make. When he breaks through his psychological limits and awakens the mysterious "SEED factor," his split-second combat reflexes make him an untouchable, god-tier battlefield ace.
AZ

Athrun Zala

Red Knight of ZAFT / Aegis Pilot

An exiled Britannian prince hiding out as a brilliant, bored high school student in Area 11 (formerly Japan). When a mysterious girl grants him the "Absolute Obedience" Geass—allowing him to command anyone to do anything via direct eye contact—Lelouch turns the entire world into his personal chess board. Donning a dramatic cape and mask as the revolutionary leader "Zero," he orchestrates a massive, hyper-calculated rebellion against his own tyrannical father. He is the ultimate shonen strategist, famous for his theatrical hand gestures and his terrifying willingness to sacrifice anything—and anyone—to build a gentler world for his sister, Nunnally.
LC

Lacus Clyne

Songstress of PLANT / Leader of Peace

The pink-haired, ethereal idol singer and political princess of the Coordinator colonies (the PLANTs). Initially introduced as an intensely airheaded, pacifist sweetheart who wanders around space with a bouncing pink "Haro" robot, Lacus is actually a masterclass subversion of the standard anime pop idol. Beneath her bubbly, gentle exterior hides a fiercely intelligent, iron-willed political visionary. Disillusioned by her nation's descent into fascist racial supremacy, she covertly steals ZAFT's ultimate military asset to build a powerful third-party coalition dedicated to ending the war entirely.
CY

Cagalli Yula Athha

The Desert Tiger Princess / Resistance Fighter

A hot-tempered, fiercely independent, and tomboyish young woman introduced fighting alongside desert resistance fighters against ZAFT occupation. Cagalli violently rejects her status as the hidden princess of the neutral Orb Union, choosing to risk her life on the frontlines using regular military hardware. Armed with an explosive mouth, a massive protective streak over civilians, and a complete lack of fear, her chaotic entry into Kira and Athrun's lives blows up their emotional wiring, leading to a massive, dual-bloodline revelation that shapes the entire global conflict.
RL

Rau Le Creuset

Masked Commander / Cosmic Nihilist

ZAFT’s elite, silver-masked tactical commander who captains the Vesalius destroyer. Rau is a master manipulator who glides through the series with a theatrical, chillingly polite elegance, piloting high-performance mobile suits with terrifying spatial awareness. While he presents himself as a patriotic soldier fighting for Coordinator supremacy, he is secretly an unhinged, absolute nihilist. Driven by an agonizing past of illegal genetic cloning and a deep, physiological hatred for the human race, his ultimate goal isn't victory—it is to escalate the war until both Naturals and Coordinators completely erase each other from existence.
ML

Mu La Flaga

The Hawk of Endymion / Skygrasper Ace

The charismatic, incredibly confident ace fighter pilot of the Earth Alliance military who proudly carries the legendary title "The Hawk of Endymion." Operating as the relaxed, older brother figure aboard the escape ship Archangel, Mu is a Natural who possesses a rare, supernatural spatial awareness that allows him to match high-performance Coordinator suits using a basic Skygrasper fighter jet. He runs a permanent, psychic battlefield rivalry against Rau Le Creuset, effortlessly anchoring the emotional morale of the young crew with his iconic, swagger-filled promise: "I'm the guy who can make the impossible possible!"
YJ

Yzak Jule

ZAFT Red Coat Ace / Duel Pilot

The silver-haired, hot-tempered elite "Red Coat" pilot of ZAFT who commands the stolen GAT-X102 Duel Gundam. Yzak is fueled by an intense, toxic inferiority complex regarding Athrun Zala's superior rank and natural combat genius. When a brutal dogfight against Kira Yamato leaves his face permanently scarred by cockpit shrapnel, his pride shatters, sending him into a screaming, vengeful bloodlust on the frontlines. Despite his vicious, aggressive behavior, he harbors a hidden, deep-seated sense of military honor that evolves beautifully as the war darkens.
DE

Dearka Elsman

ZAFT Artillery Specialist / Buster Pilot

The laid-back, smug, and deeply sarcastic ZAFT elite pilot who operates the hijacked GAT-X103 Buster Gundam. Armed with a massive array of long-range artillery cannons, Dearka initially spends his time casually throwing out derogatory slurs toward the "Natural" citizens of the Earth Alliance. However, after his mobile suit is heavily disabled and he is taken prisoner aboard the Archangel, his forced proximity to civilian refugees and a close, complex relationship with Miriallia Haww completely dismantle his racial prejudices, sparking a quiet, profound political defection.
NA

Nicol Amalfi

SPOILER!

Tragic ZAFT Elite / Blitz Pilot

The youngest, gentlest, and most artistic member of the Le Creuset squad. A talented pianist at heart who openly hates violence but enlists in ZAFT to protect his home planet, Nicol pilots the stealth-capable GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam. He acts as Athrun Zala’s closest confidant and emotional anchor within the hostile team dynamics. Tragically, his selfless nature seals his fate during a chaotic, high-stakes duel in the Pacific Ocean when he throws his mecha directly in front of Kira’s blade to shield a vulnerable Athrun, delivering the series' most devastating, plot-shifting trauma point.
NB

Natarle Badgiruel

Archangel Sub-Commander / Iron Executive

The intensely rigid, by-the-book sub-commander and tactical officer of the battleship Archangel. Hailing from a proud, multi-generational military family, Natarle serves as the absolute structural foil to Captain Murrue Ramius, constantly demanding strict execution of regulations, cold tactical trade-offs, and the prioritization of military objectives over civilian emotional comfort. Despite her frosty, uncompromising demeanor, she is a peerless operational bridge officer whose rapid tactical calculations are the only reason the ship survives its harrowing escape across the globe.
MR

Murrue Ramius

Captain of the Archangel / Moral Commander

A warm-hearted, highly capable Earth Alliance engineer who is unexpectedly thrust into command of the state-of-the-art mobile assault ship Archangel after the entire senior officer staff is wiped out in the initial ZAFT raid. Murrue is the absolute emotional anchor of the ship—constantly struggling to balance her military duties with her fierce, maternal desire to protect the terrified teenage civilians trapped aboard. Her loose, empathetic leadership style puts her in perpetual, vein-popping ideological conflict with her rigid sub-commander, Natarle Badgiruel, but her instinctual tactical gambits are the only reason the ship repeatedly survives impossible odds.
FA

Flay Allster

SPOILER!

Tragic Civilian / Psychological Catalyst

A wealthy, fiercely arrogant, and sheltered daughter of a prominent Earth Alliance diplomat. Flay’s entire reality shatters when she watches her father's starship get violently incinerated by ZAFT mobile suits. Traumatized, grieving, and harboring a deep, xenophobic hatred for all Coordinators, she executes a calculated, deeply toxic psychological campaign to seduce Kira Yamato. By weaponizing his guilt and affection, she turns him into her personal, blood-soaked attack dog to slaughter his own kind. She is early mecha's most complex, deeply dark civilian character—a tragic portrait of grief twisted into emotional warfare.
PZ

Patrick Zala

SPOILER!

ZAFT Supreme Chairman / Radical Dictator

Athrun Zala’s cold, intensely imposing father and the Supreme Chairman of the PLANT National Defense Committee. Consumed by a blinding, absolute madness after his wife perished in the nuclear devastation of the Bloody Valentine tragedy, Patrick completely hijacks the Coordinator government. He shifts their military objective from regional defense to total racial eradication. He views natural-born humans as sub-human vermin that must be permanently cleansed from the cosmos, eventually constructing the world-ending, gamma-ray laser weapon GENESIS to execute his genocidal vision, completely blind to the fact that his radicalism is tearing his own son's soul apart.
MA

Muruta Azrael

SPOILER!

Blue Cosmos Leader / Military Industrialist

The multi-millionaire director of the Atlantic Federation’s military-industrial complex and the fanatical, unhinged leader of the eco-terrorist organization "Blue Cosmos." Azrael is the ultimate ideological monster of the Natural world—operating under the psychotic, fundamentalist slogan: "For the rebirth of a blue and pure world!" He doesn't view the Coordinator conflict as a political dispute; he views it as a holy war to exterminate an unnatural, gene-spliced threat to humanity. Smug, wildly unstable, and armed with limitless black-budget capital, he aggressively deploys his own trio of drug-addled "Extended" pilot monsters just to watch the universe burn.
AW

Andrew Waltfeld

The Desert Tiger / ZAFT Commander

The coffee-obsessed, highly honorable, and dangerously perceptive ZAFT commander known as "The Desert Tiger." Operating out of Northern Africa in his custom TMF/A-802 BuCUE, Waltfeld forces Kira Yamato to understand that war isn't a simple game between villains and heroes, but a tragic clash between conflicting perspectives. His mid-season desert showdown against the Strike Gundam is the exact turning point where the series transforms from a simple mecha escape show into a deep, philosophical anti-war narrative.
