Details & Synopsis
Gon Freecss is twelve years old and lives on Whale Island with his aunt, who tells him his parents are dead. They are not. His father, Ging Freecss, is one of the greatest Hunters alive - and he left Gon behind to be one. Gon decides to become a Hunter too. Not to confront him. Not out of anger. Out of curiosity. He wants to understand what was worth more than he was.

This is the emotional engine that drives everything. The show never loses it even when the scale inflates to something unrecognizable from that island and that question.

Based on Yoshihiro Togashi's manga and produced by Nippon Animation, Hunter x Hunter aired on Nippon TV from 1999 to 2001. Sixty-two television episodes plus three OVA series that extend the story through the Yorknew City arc and Greed Island. The Hunter Exam that opens the series is one of the great gauntlets in shonen anime - brutal, inventive, and built to introduce the cast through situation rather than exposition. Killua Zoldyck walks into it from an entirely different world than Gon and the contrast between them - the boy who was loved too freely and the boy who was never loved at all - is the real subject of the series.

The Nen system - aura categories, hatsu types, the specific logic of how will and personality shape power - is the most carefully engineered ability framework the genre had seen to that point. It rewards attention. It punishes shortcuts. When the Yorknew City arc arrives and the Phantom Troupe is introduced, the show demonstrates exactly what that framework is capable of when the people using it have been alive longer and want things more.

The 1999 version is darker and slower than the 2011 Madhouse remake. Both are legitimate. This one came first. This is the version the fansub community built itself around before HxH became a property anyone outside of dedicated anime spaces had heard of. Togashi's recurring health-related hiatuses made the anime the primary way most Western fans experienced the story for years.

Sixty-two episodes of television and then the OVAs. Do not stop at the TV series. The Yorknew City and Greed Island OVAs are not optional.

GF

Gon Freecss

Optimistic Prodigy / Rookie Hunter

A wide-eyed, wild-haired 12-year-old boy from Whale Island who enters the terrifyingly lethal Hunter Exam with a singular, bizarre goal: to figure out what makes being a "Hunter" so incredibly great that his father, Ging, chose it over raising his own son. Gon is the absolute engine of the story, combining an untamed, nature-tuned sensory radar with an unblinking, borderline-psychopathic stubbornness. While his boundless optimism routinely charms the cold-blooded killers around him, the 1999 adaptation masterfully accents the dormant, terrifying intensity hiding just behind his innocent eyes.
KZ

Killua Zoldyck

Ex-Assassin / Prodigal Heir

A silver-haired, skateboard-riding 12-year-old who joins the Hunter Exam purely because he heard it was notoriously difficult and he was bored. In reality, Killua is the elite prodigy of the infamous Zoldyck family of mountain-dwelling assassins, having been subjected to brutal torture, poison immunity training, and psychological conditioning since infancy. Despite his lethal ability to rip out a man's heart in the blink of an eye without breaking a sweat, his relationship with Gon sparks a beautifully tragic desire to escape his family's bloody legacy and just be a normal kid.
KU

Kurapika

Avenger / The Last Kurta

A highly educated, fiercely disciplined, and deeply stoic young man who is the sole remaining survivor of the slaughtered Kurta Clan. Driven by a burning, all-consuming desire for vengeance, Kurapika seeks a Hunter License exclusively to hunt down the Phantom Troupe—the elite criminal syndicate that systematically tortured and murdered his entire family to harvest their legendary, glowing "Scarlet Eyes." The 1999 Yorknew City OVA arc serves as his absolute magnum opus, rendering his descent into dark, chain-wielding psychological warfare with an unparalleled gothic atmosphere.
LP

Leorio Paradinight

Hot-Headed Medic / Moral Compass

A towering, hot-tempered young man in a business suit and tiny sunglasses who carries a switchblade and aggressively claims he only wants to become a Hunter to get filthy, disgustingly rich. While he initially acts as the comic relief of the rookie group, Leorio's loudmouthed materialism is rapidly revealed to be a total front—he actually needs the bottomless wealth of a Hunter License to fund medical school so he can treat impoverished patients for free, a devotion sparked by the tragic death of a childhood friend. He is the fiercely loyal, purely human heart of the crew.
HM

Hisoka Morow

The Magician / Chaotic Wildcard

An enigmatic, highly dangerous serial killer dressed as a flamboyant court jester who treats the entire Hunter organization like his personal playground. Driven entirely by a gluttonous, borderline-erotic obsession with fighting powerful opponents, Hisoka actively protects Gon and Killua during the exam because he views them as "unripe fruit" that will be infinitely more satisfying to violently slaughter once they grow to their full potential. Wielding his deceptively versatile aura techniques, "Bungee Gum" and "Texture Surprise," he is early shonen's most terrifying, unpredictable monster.
CL

Chrollo Lucilfer

SPOILER!

Phantom Troupe Leader / Master Thief

The brilliant, deeply charismatic, and chillingly nihilistic founder and leader of the Phantom Troupe (The Spider). Hailing from the lawless, forgotten wasteland of Meteor City, Chrollo is an intellectual sociopath who views human life—including his own—as completely disposable, yet harbors an unshakeable, fiercely protective love for his twelve core members. Using his Nen ability, "Skill Hunter," contained within a conjured trench-coat book, he can permanently steal the unique supernatural powers of other warriors, making his orchestral, high-rise clash against the Zoldyck elders in the Yorknew OVA an absolute peak of late-90s anime television.
IZ

Illumi Zoldyck

SPOILER!

Elite Assassin / Overprotective Brother

Killua’s eldest brother—a stone-faced, blank-eyed elite assassin who radiates pure, localized terror. Illumi views Killua not as a sibling, but as the family's ultimate multi-million-dollar weapon asset that must be strictly controlled. Operating under the disguise of "Gittarackur" during the Hunter Exam by distorting his entire skull with custom Nen needles, his true reveal remains one of the most chilling psychological checkpoints of the early arcs. He manipulates Killua through a literal, brain-embedded needle of fear, making him a phenomenal recurring antagonist.
UV

Uvogin

Phantom Troupe No. 11 / The Juggernaut

The absolute, undisputed physical apex of the Phantom Troupe. Bearing the number 11 spider tattoo, Uvogin is a towering, wild-haired Enhancer who treats massive military artillery fire like a light breeze and can shatter a valley floor with a single "Big Bang Impact" fist. He lives exclusively for the thrill of raw, unmitigated combat. His legendary, blood-soaked frontline clash against the Mafia's Shadow Beasts in the wasteland—where he literally kills an opponent using nothing but his teeth—is an absolute high-water mark for the gritty animation style of the 1999 series.
PA

Pakunoda

SPOILER!

Phantom Troupe Intelligence / Memory Hunter

The fiercely elegant, tall, and highly intelligent core member of the Phantom Troupe. Pakunoda handles the Spider’s psychological counter-intelligence using her unique Nen ability: by simply touching a target and asking a question, she can instantly extract their raw, unfiltered memories. Wielding a physical revolver loaded with "Memory Bombs," she can shoot these recalled thoughts directly into her comrades' brains. Her quiet, internal conflict during the climax of the Yorknew arc anchors the emotional tragedy of the Troupe, proving they aren't just mindless monsters, but a tight-knit family.

Wing

Nen Instructor / Auxiliary Mentor

A deceptively messy, sleepy-looking martial artist who acts as Gon and Killua’s very first proper spiritual gatekeeper at Heaven's Arena. Wing is the guy responsible for pulling back the curtain on the series' entire supernatural architecture, introducing the boys to the dangerous world of Nen. Despite his shirt constantly being half-untucked and his mild-mannered demeanor, his brief flashes of absolute aura control show exactly why he's a trusted master, setting the foundation for every single superpower mechanic in the franchise.

Biscuit Krueger (Bisky)

SPOILER!

Greed Island Master / Hidden Powerhouse

A porcelain, doll-faced 12-year-old girl in a frilly pink dress who encounters Gon and Killua inside the virtual nightmare of the Greed Island OVA. In absolute reality, "Bisky" is a 57-year-old, hyper-muscular, 7-foot-tall Amazonian martial arts colossus who adopts her cute child form exclusively because she loathes her natural, terrifying physique. Taking over the boys' training with a brutal, military-grade boot camp regimen, she molds their Nen abilities into true weapons, serving as the ultimate subversion of the standard shonen mentor trope.

Genthru (The Bomber)

SPOILER!

Greed Island Serial Killer / "The Bomber"

The cold, calculating, and completely sociopathic primary antagonist of the Greed Island OVA arc. Spending five literal years deep undercover inside a massive player alliance under the guise of a mild-mannered support teammate, Genthru covertly attaches his terrifying Nen ability, "Countdown," to dozens of players simultaneously. Revealing his identity as the murderous "Bomber," he treats the digital card-collecting game like a hostage situation, forcing a desperate, high-stakes final tactical showdown against Gon's squad in the rocky canyon plains.

Silva Zoldyck

Zoldyck Patriarch / Elite Assassin

Killua's towering, muscular father and the current patriarch of the legendary Zoldyck assassin family. Silva is a pragmatic, terrifyingly powerful Transmuter who rules his family with a philosophy of absolute control mixed with twisted paternal pride. His high-stakes, high-rise Nen encounter against Chrollo Lucilfer during the Yorknew mob auction is one of the most atmospheric, beautifully shadowed combat sequences Nippon Animation ever produced.

Zeno Zoldyck

Zoldyck Grandfather / Dragon Dive Master

Killua’s eccentric, sharp-tongued grandfather. Wearing a ribbon that literally translates to "A Kill a Day," Zeno is a lethal, pragmatic assassin who treats fighting elite, world-ending threats like a standard 9-to-5 contracting job. His mastery of Nen allows him to manifest massive, destructive aura dragons, making his tandem assault alongside Silva against the Phantom Troupe leader an absolute masterclass in tactical, veteran combat pacing.
