Read or Die

R.O.D: Read or Die
2001 –2002 Studio Deen OVA 3 episodes Completed
Action Spy Sci-Fi Adventure
Details & Synopsis
Yomiko Readman is a substitute teacher, a special agent of the British Library, and the most dangerous bibliophile on the planet. Codenamed "The Paper," she can manipulate paper into weapons, shields, and anything else her imagination can conjure. Three episodes. Ninety minutes. One of the tightest, most purely fun anime ever produced.

Released by Studio Deen in 2001, Read or Die is a James Bond film filtered through a love of books and animated at a level that had no business existing for an OVA. The opening sequence - set on the roof of the White House, shot with the Twin Towers still standing in the New York skyline - is unforgettable for reasons the creators never intended. The action choreography is still spectacular. The paper effects are still creative. Yomiko Readman is still one of the best protagonists of her era.

Three episodes. Watch them all tonight.

Yomiko Readman

"The Paper" / British Library Agent

The ultimate bookworm who literally lives inside a towering fortress of novels. Despite her incredibly clumsy, scatterbrained civilian demeanor, Yomiko is secretly a legendary special agent for the British Library's Special Operations Division, codenamed "The Paper." Possessing the supernatural ability to manipulate paper into razor-sharp weapons, bulletproof shields, and giant origami flight-craft, her pure, unyielding love for books and people makes her an incredibly endearing and unstoppable hero.

Nancy Makuhari

SPOILER!

Special Operations Agent / "Miss Deep"

Codenamed Miss Deep. Yomiko's field partner and the most layered presence in the OVA. Her ability to phase through solid matter makes her the most tactically versatile agent on the team, and she functions throughout most of the story as a composed, capable older sister to Yomiko. What she actually is runs deeper than that.

Nancy is an I-jin, but she differs from the others in one key respect: unlike the I-jin created from Fabre, Ikkyu, or Beethoven, she requires no artificial organs to function. And unlike them, the historical figure she was cloned from is never clearly identified. British Library records list a Cambridge education and Scotland Yard service history, but those records are thrown into serious doubt late in the OVA when Wendy Earhart produces a document for Joseph Carpenter: a Los Angeles County death certificate establishing that the original young woman Nancy's identity was built around died years before the events of the story. How much of the official biography is real and how much is cover legend is never resolved. The OVA does not try to resolve it.

What it does resolve clearly is her relationship with Yomiko. Whatever the history underneath her is, the devotion is genuine. The show makes that the final word on the question, which is the right call.
DA

Drake Anderson

Tactical Mercenary / Field Support

The grizzled, highly pragmatic mercenary hired by the British Library to provide heavy firepower and tactical backup. Lacking any superhuman paper-bending or phasing abilities, Drake relies purely on rigorous military training, high-caliber firearms, and combat experience. He acts as the grounded, protective adult in a squad of eccentric superhuman agents, constantly worrying about surviving the mission so he can return home safely to his daughter.
JO

Joker

Head of Special Operations

The incredibly refined, tea-drinking director of the British Library Special Operations Division. Operating from a secret underground base hidden beneath Big Ben, Joker is a master bureaucrat and tactician who coordinates international missions to recover lost books and defend the world. While he presents a calm, sophisticated exterior, his cold, calculating dedication to the British Library's ultimate goals hints at a much darker, pragmatic streak.
WE

Wendy Earhart

Joker's Assistant / Field Coordinator

Joker's fiercely dedicated, perpetually busy teenage personal assistant. Wendy is responsible for managing the day-to-day logistics of the Special Operations base, which usually involves pouring perfect cups of English tea and chasing after the chaotic, book-distracted Yomiko. Highly capable and eager to prove herself in the field, she brings a youthful, professional energy to the secret agent dynamic.
IS

Ikkyu Soujun

SPOILER!

Mastermind / I-Jin Leader

A cloned incarnation of the eccentric Japanese Zen monk, serving as the mastermind behind the I-Jin conspiracy. Elegant, ruthless, and utterly contemptuous of humanity, Ikkyu seeks to execute "Beethoven's Suicide Symphony" to trigger mass global suicide and cleanse the Earth. His ability to manipulate wind, coupled with his chilling charisma, makes him a terrifying threat who orchestrates the theft of critical historical manuscripts to fuel his apocalyptic concert.
GH

Gennai Hiraga

Electricity-Manipulating I-Jin

The cloned reincarnation of the famous Edo-period Japanese inventor. Gennai is a highly eccentric, manic combatant who flies around on a massive, retro-futuristic wooden flying machine of his own design. Wielding a giant, electrostatic generator-staff that allows him to summon devastating, localized lightning strikes, he serves as the primary, explosive threat of the OVA's first episode, initiating the heist on Yomiko's precious books.
JF

Jean-Henri Fabre

Giant Insect Summoner / I-Jin

The cloned version of the celebrated French entomologist. Fabre is a cold, calculated antagonist who has zero interest in human affairs, preferring the company of his beloved bugs. He has the supernatural ability to control and command swarms of giant, genetically modified insects. Whether riding a colossal grasshopper into battle or unleashing swarms of flesh-eating hornets, he is a terrifyingly unique threat to the British Library agents.
OL

Otto Lilienthal

Glider Pioneer / Honorable I-Jin

The clone of the legendary German aviation pioneer. Sporting a massive set of mechanical, strap-on glider wings, Otto is the master of the skies for the I-Jin faction. Unlike his more sadistic comrades, Otto possesses a noble, almost tragic sense of honor, refusing to fight dirty and displaying a genuine passion for the beauty of flight. He plays a pivotal, dramatic role in the sky battles over the Atlantic.
NM

Nancy Makuhari (Younger Clone)

SPOILER!

The Redemptive Sister

A younger, newly awakened clone of Nancy Makuhari created by the I-Jin faction to replace the original. While she possesses the exact same molecular-phasing abilities as "Miss Deep," she has absolutely no memories of the first Nancy's betrayal or her close relationship with Yomiko. Following the tragic climax of the OVA, Yomiko takes this innocent child under her wing, promising to raise her as a normal girl, creating a beautifully emotional and hopeful end to the series.
